The card in question is capable of Class 4 speeds.

Replacing a Faulty TV Under Warranty

We bought an LCD TV from a company called TCL last year. It came with a standard two-year manufacturer’s warranty. Five months in, vertical black and purple lines appeared in the center of the display, and got worse as time went on. We sent the TCL repair center the broken TV, but they sent back a refurbished RCA TV with the same specs. The remote accompanying the new TV was damaged and had corroded batteries; there was no power cord for the TV, and no paperwork whatsoever. A few weeks have passed since we called TCL asking for a power cord, remote, and paperwork. I know warranties may allow companies to send refurbished units as a replacement, but the repair center sent a totally different brand with nothing else in the box. I’m not sure what to do!

Use Your Photo Editor to Add Water Reflections

Most of us use a photo editor for touch-up work–fixing red eye, straightening a crooked photo, perhaps even some color correction. Last week, for example, I explained some simple ways to clean up a portrait by removing red eye, whitening teeth, and erasing skin blemishes. But programs like Adobe Photoshop Elements, Corel Paint Shop Pro, and GIMP can do so much more. What if you wanted to add a reflection to a photo, for example, as if your scene were surrounded by water? Today I’ll show you how to do it using Photoshop Elements, and it’ll take about five minutes.

Expand Your Canvas

Suppose you have a photo like this one: A shot of the New York skyline that I recently took from atop Rockefeller Center.

I would like to add a reflection of the skyline to the bottom of the photo, as if all of Manhattan is sitting at the edge of a river. (Manhattan does sit at the edge of a river–two of them, in fact–but not from this particular vantage point.)

Why Can’t I Access This Web Site?

Deedrio couldn’t access a particular Web site that had never before been a problem, and turned to the Web Browsing and Email forum for help.

You’ve got two tasks here. First, you need to find a workaround that will let you to get to the site. And second, you need to fix the underlying problem so that you don’t have to keep using a workaround.

Actually, the underlying problem may not even be yours. The site could really be down.

To find out, visit http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com, enter the URL, press ENTER, and wait for the results. If Downforeveryoneorjustme tells you that “It’s not just you,” there’s not much you can do about it. Someone else has to fix it. If you have a way to contact the people running the site, inform them of the problem.

But if the problem appears to be yours, here are a few things you might want to try:

Digital Signatures Let You Ditch That Old Fax Machine

Even when faxes were in widespread use, dropped calls and shaky transmissions made them an ineffective means of communication. In the 21st century, you generally don’t need a fax machine in the office unless your industry demands it.

Of course, there are ways to send faxes without a fax machine. But how can you be sure the recipient will accept your signed form as coming from your own hand?

A digitally-signed document employs several levels of cryptography to keep your signature secure, along with a timestamp to show when it was signed. There’s also usually a verification component to prove that it came from the signer. Here are several tools that let you make digital signatures and abandon that dinosaur fax machine for good.
